The Color of Magic and The Light Fantastic

Two books by Terry Pratchet that I out together since they are two parts of the same story.

Here we read of the travels of a wizard called Rincewind as he guides a tourist called Twoflowers.

But it just happens that Rincewind is a wizard almost unable to do magic, and Twoflowers has a very optimistic and pacific view of things in a very dangerous world. That result in a lot of comedy moments on the book.

The books are also a good way to show how Discworld is, and the mithology in it, a world where magic, gods, heroes and fantasy exist.

Totally recomended.

TV Series Game Of Thrones

Been watching this TV series lately. It has a very interesting history. I found there are books of it, So Might be interesting to see if they are available to read.

The series is about the fight to control the throne of a realm in a fiction world between several royal families.

So far this first season has been really interesting.

Just be warned , being an hbo series, has lot of sex scenes that are not needed on the history.

Went to see the "Planet of the apes Revolution" movie, and found it entertaining. A good improvement over the terrible remake by Burton.

Super 8, two sides of one movie

Went to see the Super 8 movie, to me it was both a good movie and a bad movie.

On one side the good movie, the tale about the kids filming the movie, and the little histories that appear among them, that kind of remind me of the Stand by Me movie.

On the other side, a extremely bad movie, the non-mysterious, non-conflictive, non-thrilling alien part.

Depends on what you go to see, if you want to see a sci-fi thriller expect a total garbage, if you go to see a kids growing movie then its a good one.

Went reading the Foundation Series by Isaac Asimov.

Its a history of a future when mankind rules the universe in a big empire, but the empire has already started to decay so on a planet at the edge of the empire a planet is founded to create the star point for a newer empire that can rise after the fall of the first one, minimizing the time of caos caused by the fall of such a empire.

I love how we can see the rise of a new empire, and by it get a little glimpse of the fall of another. I loved how the story is set by crisis at the begining. How the diferent stages of the new empire so different fit so good in the non-adyacent points in the whole timeline.

Also liked the introduction of "The Mule", and how it creates a bigger chaos, that breaks the succesion of crisis-solution-change of the first stages of the Foundation history.

Amazing novels, a 100/100.

TV series “The walking dead”

So I watched the 6 episodes that are season one of TV series “the walking Dead” that came out last year. A TV series about Zombies sure sounded like something good.

The series start OK, an interesting subject, an a good first try to show zombies on TV.

First chapter feels a LOT like the movie “28 days later” we get to see the main carácter fight a zombie, then there is the flashbacks to where he was shot and sent to hospital, and he later wakes up to see that its emití, dead people are everywhere, and soon see the zombies walking round. First Survivor found him, to realize what happened , to find that his familia maybe scaped, to hear that in Atlanta at CDC maybe there is help. To go to a city and run into a pack of zombies and barely scape. A good first chapter.

At a second we find that there are more survivors on the forest, among the familia of our main carácter Rick, while in the city he is saved by another group of survivors, but the rescue draws zombies to the building they were hiding, so they have to plan a scape while they solve the conflicto among them. They manage to scape, and surprise they belong to the other survivor group at the forest. The city part was good, the camp part felt like pointless at times, specially the part of rick’s wife being the lover of his best friend, a too obvious attempt to put another conflict dressed as a love triangle.

But still so far the series started good.

Chapter 3 is the time to meet all the other characters, the survivors at camp, but here it fails, the love-conflict just dissapears in two sentences, the other characters are shown withouth background, no reason to say "Oh that one deserves to survive", Chapter ends with Rick and 3 people going back to the city to rescue someone they left behind.

Chapter 4, action is divided by two, the city part where we see the group giong back to rescue Merle, Rick leading, Darryl who is Merle's brother, Glenn who knows how to move at the city, and T-Dog who was the one who left Merle behind. They will find that Merle has scaped the zombies, they will give us bit f internal conflict, they will meet another group of survivors, and almost got to fight to them because both groups want a bag of guns (how they solve the ownership of the guns seems a little bit absurd but is still beleivable) those 4 characters will have a development. At the same time some other things happen at the camp, but it is just boring and ridiculous (their biggest conflict was some guy digging holes), by the end, the camp is attacked by zombies, and the group of 4 manages to return from the city just in time to save the others.

Fifth chapter, the camp is no longer safe, so its time to move, some will travel with Rick to the CDC at Atlanta, other will take their own path, they reach the CDC, before night arrives, a chapter that is so long and so boring. It ends with Rick shouting at the CDC doors in a last scream of hope.

Those middle 3 chapters is where the series starts to go down, the camp stories feel either too overwritten, or too light, or just stupid, Almost all characters feel like they are just there for no reason.

The sixth and las chapter we get to see the CDC open, they find one scietist, they get the explaining of what, why, how, of the zombies. But CDC is not the help they hoped, its actually about to dissapear when energy runs out. It tries to bring back the love triangle, to just make it go away the next second, as if to remind the audience that the conflict is stil there making it pointless. The only point of interest is when the science guy decide to close the room for all to die. The group manages to convince him to let them try for survival, to try to scape the CDC and hope they can go outside and find a scape route from the zombies. It even gives them a limited time, but reality is that trick to makes us thrill is unnecesary, for as long as we see, we don't care who survives and who doesn't, we just want rick to scape so that along with his hopes of surviving, there is hope that the series goes back to a good story on a second season after this rebound last chapter.

One can hope that on the second season we get to see more zombie action, but more than that, the series need to find another group of survivors, that gives us the human factor, that group internal conflict that makes you say "I want them to survive".

A series that started great, got a bad middle point, and started to grow back on the end. Maybe next season will make it back to being an interesting one.

Let me in

Over the weekend saw the "let me in" movie, the amerikan remake of a swedish movie. I haven't seen the original one so I cant compare, but somehow thats good, since I can see the movie by itsef.

The movie goes about a boy called Owen that live in an apartment place and is bullyied by his schoolmates. Two new people come to live at the apartments and soon one night Owen meets the new girl Abby. As time goes Abby and Owen become friends. Problem is Abby is a vampire.
During those days, Abby's "father" is seen around town murdering people to get blood, and an Inspector trying to solve the murders.
Both side of the story come to a meeting point where both Owen and Abby must take a decision on what to do, and what about eachother.

The movie is good, it was an interesting new point of view of the vampire myth, and a nice way of puting the contrast beetwen the evil aura that a vampire supposedly has, and the cuteness of children.
80% of the movie is Abby and Owen, and both kid actors give a good performance in playing them.
Other good thing about the movie is the settings and images, those really make you feel the tension, loneliness and isolation.
A great scene also at the burning at the hospital.

A good movie to see.

Book “The supidest angel”

Judging by the book cover, whenever I saw this book at stores, I always tought it was a childrens book, a good feelings book, or a religíous book. I bought it after Redding another book by Chritopher Moore and discovering its another book by this author found in Spanish.

In the spanish edition the book at the first page has a warning tellina that “If you bought this book for a grandma OR a kid, be warned that it has swearing, canibalismo, sex acts, and manny other bad things.”

Just the warning makes you want to read the book.

The book begins with a kid seeing how Santa Claus is murdered, excet is not Santa, just a guy disguised. At the same Time an angel is sent to earth to fullfill a wish. The wish of “Resurrect Santa to save Xmas” rounds like a good one,so after all many movies have a similar line as the basic plot idea. Problem here is that by raising from the dead the guy disguised as Santa Claus, the angel actuáis brings him as a Zombie.

Zombie plague at Xmas, that is a good idea for a book, but in this case it became an amazing book since Cristpher Moore humorous writing style is so great, that makes you laugh every page.

This weekend went to see horror movies

First one, The Echo, that turned to be an interesting movie, a nice plot, transmits well the feeling of isolation of the main character, and manages to give a couple of well realized scares. Good movie.

Second one was , The last Exorcism, that was also good, excep for the ending that i really found preposterous.

Zombie Anime

Just finished watching an anime called "Highschool of the dead", a title that shouts ZOMBIES.

A day like any other, all highschool students at the classroom, except for Komuro who skipped class, and sees the start, how a stranger comes to the school door and attacks biting some professors. Problem is after the teachers die, they came back as zombies.

First act, we get to see the students reaction, most of then just running to the exit and dying to become more zombies, we get to see the main characters start on their own and planning on how to survive, finally getting all together and planning to escape school, which they manage to do via a school bus, along with a second group of survivors. Only to find out the city is also attacked by the zombies.

Second act, conflict inside the bus arise, the other group with a teacher in charges wants to take command of the bus, Rei and Komuro leave the bus, and suddenly are separated from the group, the decision is to meet at some common point by the next morning. While on route, the remainder of the original group leaves the bus and goes to the meeting point.

Third act, all together, the group takes refuge at the house of the nurse’s friend who happens to be military. A stop point to rest, eat, clean, get supplies and rethink strategy in order to go look for their families. Suddenly they see a man with his little girl being attacked y zombies, the dad is killed but manages to temporarily save the girl, Komuro decides to save the girl, but by doing so alerts the zombies, and so they have to leave the safe place behind.

Fourth act, is the group going around town towards their families houses, first by proximity is Saya, but they came to a road-block, and while turning back the car stops working, and zombies start to move towards them, A fight for survival with all of their guns, is quickly coming to the point where no ammo is left, and physical fight is the only possibility to survive. When all seems lost a group of people from the other side of the road block came to rescue them.

A fifth act, we see the rescue party is from Saya's mom, along with her father they have rescued people around town and take them to the gardens of their big house, a safe place, with blockade against zombies. The kids got a pause to rest, get more supplies and get their car fixed. But the peace is short, an accident outside the house breaks one of the blockades, and soon the zombies manage to enter the gardens attacking people. Saya's parents decide to go and help the survivors, while the kids decide to go out and continue their road to the rest of the families.

Hopefully there is a second season for the anime, since the end, is not quite an ending.

A nice zombie survival story, which I totally recommend if you like that kind of thing. But the anime has a big problem, maybe huge problem. The amount of fan service is just too much, and sometimes even ridiculous. I understand the target audience is teenage boys, so they add fan-service to improve the selling value, but in the case of this series, the amount is just one drop short of turning a great anime into garbage.

Some time ago I blogged on how I loved to watch a cartoon on Nickelodeon, http://jessica-sweet-tv.blogspot.com/2006/03/nice-cartoon.html

I never talked about the cartoon again, even when I saw the full 3 series (called books) and that I absolutely love the history, enjoyed a great animation work, and was delighted with an excellent portrait of the characters and their personal growth.

Time later an announcement was made that a movie was to be made about the cartoon, a news received with a bit of joy, hope, and doubt (you know how sometimes going from TV to movies gives a not-so-good result)

The news on the movie started to flow, and since the start it caused a lot of negative feedback in all internet places regarding the cartoon, things like a dislike for the director, a controversy regarding casting, the forced inclusion of 3d, and many others. And finally when the movie when out to the movies, a lot of the reviews and critics said "bad movie", even some when to say "worst movie of the year"

Finally I went to see it a couple of weeks ago, and unfortunately, the movie is awful. Leaps in the history development that makes no sense, lot of bad and cliché dialog, an excessive use of voice-over narrative, terrible acting, action sequences with lousy choreography.

And I went to see it with an open mind, accepting the fact that they had to cut parts of the history (you have to put 10 hours of cartoons into a 2 hour movie), I could ignore all the minor details about changes (major characters not showing, different names to some main characters), and even forgive some bad acting due to some being kid actors, as long as the movie resulted in a minimally entertaining movie.

But here that was not, the result was a movie so badly executed, with so many time lost in repeating stuff, with scenes that had no connection to the history or the mood, with so many things that either see, hear or feel bad. I had no other option that to agree with most of the review, This movie stinks.

Yesterday's Night upon arriving to my apartment I turned the Air conditioning , and started to go around soting a few stuff I had lying around, as the temperature in my bedroom dropped my body adjusted to it. Then I went to shower to be ready to sleep, the prolem is that the bathroom was still in a hot temperature, and somehow my body got easilly adjusted to that new temperature, so when I went back to the bedroom Ifelt it too cold.

So even after putting on the lingerie and babydoll I was to wear to sleep, I was still feeling cold, specially on the legs, since also at yesterdas lunch break from work I took time to remove bodyhair. I decided to go and pick some warm pantyhose or tights.

And then there I was, all girly looking in blue from the neck and down, and seeing myself in the mirror i remembered how Jessica used to look and missed the make-up, for it has been a long time since the last time I fully dressed and transformed myself, and even when I have tried it a couple of times, there is always something that stops me half-way.

Last night was the same, to see myself all in blue, the idea on completing the trick started to growth in my mind, blurred images of make-up, the desire to put on earings.

But last night it was my need to sleep which like other times put the brakes on my mind, that stopped the idea of becoming Jessica again.

St Trinian or the disadvantage of living in a lazy illiterate thirdworld banana republic.

So went to the movies a few hours ago, for 10 films at the cinema, have already seen 7, my 3 options were a Cat and dogs film for little kids, a mexican comedy, and St. Trinians.

The title in spanish (Niñas bien) was already a warning, but the synopsis said it was a British comedy film about a girl college who has to stage a robbery to save its college. That sounded ok.

When I received the ticket I saw those 3 little words that are the sign of movie damnation ESP, meaning the movie was not in its original language, but in spanish.

I understand kids movies being dubbed to spanish, and most of the time the dubbing is a good work on kiddy movies.

Unfortunately on non kiddy movies, dubbed to spanish in 90% of the time means one of the following two options:
- A mediocre work, with flat voices and minimal acting
- The worst nightmarish thing ever, with terrible localization, and obnoxious voices.

Yes there is still a 10% possibility that you find a good dubbing in Spanish, after all in the past (10 years ago or more) the dubbing made in Mexico was the best, unfortunately now that is only true in very few movies.

So I went into the movie with lots of fear, the movie starts, and the horror, the first sentence is spoken in a really bad faked voice, and using mexican slang words.

And it was there that I had to heard not only the worst kind of spanish dubbing, but actually the worst among the worst, the one that tries to be funny by using semi-outdated slang words, heavy stereotypical accents, and sentences that hurt the brain.

From what I saw, I am sure the movie is funny to watch in its original language. Unfortunately in Mexico the spanish language version was modified to the point that one can't know, and only hopes that whoever decided to dubb the movie in spanish suffers the worst pain for a thousand years

Vampire Books

Since at the moment Vampires are fashionable all around, someone told me to read a series of books related to the subject. Those are part of a series of books (so far 10) wrote by Charlaine Harris.

In Mexico, only the first 3 ones are available, and so got to read them: Dead until Dark, Living Dead in Dallas, Club Dead.

In the book series, Vampires have told the world about themselves, and they drink a blood substitute called TruBlood to keep a nice image toward human, yet they still drink blood from living humans.

In the books, in a place called Bon Temps in Louisiana lives Sookie Stackhouse, a human capable of reading minds, and one night she meets a vampire (Bill) at the bar she works at as waitress. Something happens that she ends up saving him from being killed, and they end up becoming boyfriend and girlfriend.

Each book goes into this love relationship between a Vampire and a Human, but also tells about a mystery as an alternate plot to make things interesting.

On book one there is a murderer killing girls who have been related to vampires in an intimate way, and the main suspect is Sookie's brother, since he has been in a relation with each of the first two girls murdered. So Sookie has to find the real murderer before he kills her.

Second book, the chief vampire in Dallas that has gone missing, and apparently an anti-vampire church called "Sun Worshipers" are the ones that maybe kidnapped him. Sookie is recruited by the vampires to help them investigate the church and find there whereabouts of this missing vampire, in hopes of rescuing him.

Third book, in this case Vampire Bill has been kidnapped by vampires from another state, and those vampires received help from werewolves. Sookie has to go and rescue her boyfriend.

One can say that the books are entertaining, but I finished reading them maybe too fast.

Also the books promote the TV series based on them, called True Blood, so maybe I'll look into that to check it and see if it is fun to watch.

Antique, Water, Frustration, Hungry, Tower

Panfilo woke up Monday with the hope that WATER was to be at his home again. It was over a week that the neighborhood has been without the precious liquid, and unfortunately he lived on one of the buildings with ANTIQUE plumbing that did not have a water reservoir for such cases. All his water was contained in a couple of buckets around the apartment, so he had to be very careful with his water usage. Luckily he had other ways to cover for some of the activities that required it. He went to shower at the sports-club, used the nearby mall and office bathroom as much as possible, went outside to eat to avoid washing dishes, but FRUSTRATION had grown on him. Once outside the bed, he went to the bathroom with hope, but the open faucet with no water cut his illusion dry, again he would have to travel to the sports club, and drive back to the office building to arrive HUNGRY at the nearby cafeteria to have breakfast. It was during the afternoon lunch-break, that the radio finally had good news; the water pumps by the TOWERS were finally fixed and ready to go by the afternoon. The hope to finally have a nice bath at home was the best thing to finish a day.

Remake V Series

Weekend was grounded, so my entertainment consisted from things coming out of a screen or book.

Some time ago, I heard that a remake was being made of one of my favorite childhood TV series.

The V series

Oh, so great memories of childhood like the aliens becoming reptiles, how they ate the mice, or the hybrid baby being borne and bathed in oil, or the beautiful Diana leader of he aliens.

A few days ago I finally managed to get the new V series, season 1 to see it. It turned to be half-interesting.

Visitors in this new series seem more technologically advanced, and more used to use deception and conspiracy. But on the other side for the full season we never got to see how the aliens look like in reptile form. The most we get is the eyes, and a few glimpses of reptile skin when their human skin got cut.

The resistance-rebellion at the first chapters was really interesting, to see how they meet each other, how they go in their minds changing to deal with their own personal conflicts on why to be part of the rebellious group. But since till the end of the series the Aliens, have not invaded Earth, their resistance efforts seem kind of silly, except for the two ones that happen on board the visitor’s spaceships.

Now to wait and hope that there is a second season, since apparently from the hint of final season chapter, the invasion is about to begin.

Don Camilo always says, that a day without drinking a beer is not a complete day, a sentence of ultimate wisdom, but in such glorious truth there is a personal interest, since Don Camilo is the owner of the town Cantina. Reading is good, a mix of science fiction and comedy

Recently read the book “The Warrior's Apprentice” by Lois McMaster Bujold.

I see is the second of a serial of books, but the first about its main character, “Miles Vorkorsigan”.

Located in a monarchy planet in a future filled with spaceships the story goes about Miles wanting to enter the Military, being a Vorkorsigan, the family of all famous Military Heroes. But Miles has a disability, so he ends failing the physical exam by getting his legs broken and unable to take the theory exam is rejected. So he then goes on a trip to the planet of his grandmother on his mother side, along with his bodyguard Bothari, and Bothari’s daughter Elena.

Once on that planet he gets involved with 3 people, a crazy pilot, a military fugitive, and a smuggler, and ends up travelling to a war zone between two planets. Being detained for a search contraband by the mercenaries hired by one of the planets (and Miles actually smuggling things for the other planet) he has to find a way to avoid being arrested and probably killed. Using imagination and a really weird strategy he manages to not only go safe, but with time to become Admiral Naismith from an imaginary mercenary organization, that grows powerful enough to become the balancing force in the local war, just before having to return to his home planet.

A plot of science fiction and space battles that is good on itself, but that becomes a totally genius comedy thanks to the main character Miles Vorkorsigan, and the strategies he uses, that go jumping in between the ridiculous and unbelievable, to the side on efficiency of a mastery of strategy. And is thank to that, the personality and actions of Miles and friend, that what makes this work wonderful appears, a comedy that will make you laugh like mad.

Definitively I need to look for the remaining books of the series, unfortunately in spanish apparently only another one was published in Mexico, so more than probably will need to go look for English language versions.

When kid the only exposure to anime were a few shows that I didn't even know was anime, some of them were "Hutch Honeybee", "Heidi", "Demetan the frog boy", "Mazzinger".

A few years later I saw a few Anime show but only one I kept seeing, Sailor Moon, which was for a long time my favorite one. Other at the same time were Dragon Ball and some Soccer series but those didn't caught my attention.

It was a few years ago that I started seeing a few Anime show due to recommendation by a friend, one of them was Full Metal Alchemist, which soon became one of my favorite ones.

But that anime had some points in the plot that kind of didn't make sense, and soon I started reading the manga which starts the same but then goes into a completely different path.

Last year, a new version of the Anime started in Japan, this time to follow the story of the manga more closelly, and I started watching it.

So I plan to blog about the 3 of them, since summer is coming and more than probably Jessica is going into a period of time were she will be appearing only very little.

En un cuarto azul despierta un jueves, cubierta por sabanas de olor a jazmin,

La puerta entreabierta permite la huida, mas ella no es presa de ningun rey ruin,

La tarde se acaba entre risas y sombras, canciones antiguas suenan al compas,
ya viene la noche, sueños y caricias, el frio se cubre con un viejo gaban.
Los chicos se escapan, se esconden y huyen, en tina bañarse dijeron jamas,
la abuela bailando prepara el molino, pues hoy cenaremos atole con pan.

Un sabado llora el cielo sus penas, descanso o tareas habra hoy que hacer,
buscando el telefono, llamadas, suspiros,corriendo se apura a tomar el camion.
Las calles se llenan, los charcos explotan, un trafico extraño le pide correr,
ciudad en montaña con aromas se vuelve, marina entre caldos de camaron.

Las compras del martes, mañana perdida, la falda morada no pudo encontrar,
zapatos y bolsas la llaman a gritos prometen a cambio glamour y belleza.
Pasillos eternos de lujos y brillos una ultima prenda sugieren comprar,
pruebas, telas y colores perdido el encanto con una hamburguesa.

Jardines y parques recorre con calma, correr no es lo suyo para ir a pasear,
un perro que juega, columpios que vuelan, un niño que un gol ha marcado.
Los arboles trepan y esconden tesoros, las chicas la cuerda juegan a saltar,
las piedras y fuentes soporte le ofrecen, descanso agridulce de un tazon de helado.

She listens happy the sound of the chickens, as they ride in their horses away.
News that travel under the arms of a countess, and to the ears of a cherry tree will arrive.
Decisions were made in a yellow house, to gather an army of squirrels and cows.
She listens and hurried a letter she writes, blows off the candles and run for the stairs.
To the basement warehouse climbing she arrives, she sings out with the waitress, and looks for a black bottle at the same time.
She hides her message along with her breakfast, run towards the windows, and she begins to swim.
Soon followed by dolphins and Romans, to scape between seaweeds and sunken airplanes she tries.
A wind from the south her movement stops, and for a new course is all she can hope while her oatmeal basket begins to float.
Under the bridge she avoids the three clouds, while the path among the river form the sea goes away.
The mountain down there announces she finally arrived, a pink castle and a honey lake.
A critical message for the king must be delivered, lions and guards she must pass, if the ingredients list to deliver she wants.

I remember I once read or saw somewhere that as part of a fantasy history, that mirror were actually the doors or windows to an alternative universe, an universe where everything is the other way around.
And there were those were the difference was simple, like on one side the subject was left-handed as opposed to right handed, or the reflection was a good-samaritan while the main character was the evil villain, or that the real world person loved to eat pizza, while the alter ego hated it, preferring instead to eat pumpkin pie.
To those more complicated, for the alternative universe was totally different,and even if the person looked exactly the same at the mirror, in one world she was single while the reflex was married with 5 kids, or being an office worker while the alter-ego was a lion-hunter in Africa, or the king of the bizarro world.

And I wonder, if by some weird literary experiment I would try to do the alter-ego on the other side of the mirror of Jessica.
How would that other me be??
And which of my many appearances would it be? or Would it be all of them?
And if indeed the world of the mirror is the opposite, could it be that there being feminine is the usual?
And that dressing male clothes is what is considered the weird crossdressing?

The manatee is an aquatic mammal, that lives mainly on rivers.
Like all mammals it needs to breath air, it can go underwater for up to 20 minutes, but usually goes above water to breath every 1 to 4 minutes.
Manatees are also know for the name "Sea cows"
They are very peacefully creatures, and are herbivorous.
The manatee doesn't have predators, still is an endangered species.
The cause is humans, one reason is the pollution on rivers, but the main problem is boats, manatees result injured or death either by being cut by propellers or by being hit

A few days ago, the government of Mexico's Capital City, approved a city-local law that approved gay marriage.
This government have previously recognized the union in life of gay couples via a legal term called "sociedad de convivencia" but that give less rights.

Immediately after the approval of the law, there were tons of reactions, but the majority were against it. Mostly based on beliefs, religious pressure, stereotypes and baseless fears the controversy grow, and soon moved from critics, to a plain attack. It has become the answer guided by homophobia.

And that attack caused that many LGBT groups decided to respond to the so called attack, the problem was that in most of them the defense was so similar on the attacks, with lacks of arguments, and more in a position of "if you dont agree then you are wrong", and from there moved into intolerance to all those that were not with them. It became a case of hetero-phobia.

It seems even hen a few people try to give a few steps on the right path, the problem in Mexico is still, that almost everyone looks at anyone that is different as being wrong, it is now an age of phobia for tolerance.

On December 31st of 2009 there was Full Moon, a second full Moon for that month and the last of 2009 and also the first of 2010.

Where I spent the night it had a cloudy sky so the moon couldn't be watched at its best, still its image was still showing behind the clouds.

Rosca de Reyes - Kings Bread Ring

On January 6, in Mexico we celebrate the "Dia de Reyes" or "King Wisemen day"

This celebration is based on the biblical passage in which 3 people went to offer gits to baby Jesuschrist

This grow into the legend of the 3 Magician-kings-wisemen, that were one each from Europe, Africa and Asia, the arrived riding a horse, elephant and camel, the gifts were gold, incense and myrrh, their names where Melchor, Gaspar and Baltazar, and they arrived following a bright star that appeared on heavens on december 24th and traveled the skies until it stopped on top of the place where Christ was born.

To celebrate this happening, in Mexico the custom is to eat the "Rosca de Reyes", The bread on the photo, that is a symbol of the crown of the 3 wisemen, and the fruits are like the jewels.

Inside the bread there usually are little items.

In the most common tradition those items are several little dolls that are a representation of "Baby God" and the people that find the doll on their pieces of bread are the lucky ones that got to offer the food - usually atole and tamales- for the celebration of "Dia de la Candelaria" on February 2nd.

Another tradition is that the items are: a little doll and has the same meaning, a ring meaning that the lucky person gets to marry that year, a thimble meaning that person will remain single that year.

Also to celebrate "Dia de Reyes" on january 5th by night the kids leave a shoe next to the Nacimiento before going to sleep, and by morning on the 6th, a present or toy will be found if they behaved during the previous year.

Now time to go eat a little bit of "Rosca de Reyes"

Goodbye 2009

Another year by name ends, and more for customary of the date itself is that this year look back is made.
To remember the last 365 days, and try to see how life went on that time period.

What does 2009 was for Jessica.

A year that started good, a certain level of tranquility. That on early weeks allowed Jessica to show off in a somewhat constant way, being out there several weekends.
A first year that Jessica went to watch the Carnaval, first on Merida, where there was a little feeling of "being the weird one" since I saw no other trasvestite person, and that Carnaval was more like a Parade targeted to families.
A few weeks laters I went to the Carnaval in Coatzacoalcos, perhaps because I went there with other people, maybe because there were more girls like me, or due to that Carnaval having more a party spirit that a parade look, I enjoyed that one more.
And in Coatza there was a first interesting experience, going to the beach as Jessica, and even when I went there on plain clothes (no girl swimsuit) it was an interesting experience, I even ended up riding a horse.
Also this year was a first to try doing long nails (the non-glued ones) with colors and decorations, It was amazing to have those pretty nails on my hands, but it was also a bit problematic not being used to them, so simple things like to tie my shoes were too dificult or just imposible to do.
A good year start, Jessica going out, dancing, shopping, travelling.
A time to experiment with my looks and image, to try a few different hair-does, to take advantage of my now long hair, even had a dress custom made to fit.
Then there was the mid-year pause, a long pause, when Jessica entered like a summer hibernation period, spending all weekends on the island,no travelling, no dancing, no goint out, no dressing, no writing or posting photos.
By the time the year was close to ending is that Jessica reappeared, with a few extra weight on her, due to all that less activity on summer.
A coming back, that fortunately had a good amount of energy, where I had to relearn a few things, like how to do my makeup, or to spent a whole night on high heels, the first night out dancing my feet ended up in pain for not being used.
Luckily there was something that didn't dissapeared during my absence, the confidence to be myself as Jessica, to be able to go out dancing, out on the street, without the fears.
Year 2009 ends for Jessica with her wearing a new pretty dress at a Xmas party, wishing that the coming year is as good and xciting as how this started and ended.

A last trip

Between the port of Usgania, and the textile town of the Oxtatla Valley there is a wall of mountains.
It was thanks to those mountains that the Oxtatla Valley was able to grow the finest cotton of the world, but it was also those mountains that kept them away from all seaports that traveled to the great markets of the continent.
The pass of the mountains was dangerous and long, terrible cliffs and incredible falls were everywhere, narrow paths with loose soil.
For many years lot of salesmen and guides have found death on that pass.
But three years ago a new route was planned and building began thanks to that magic thing called dynamite, and so all merchants decided to build a safer pass by exploding the mountains.
In a few months it would be finished, even now there were a few guides that used parts of the new road when crossing.
But today that didn't matter, for today the last shipment to be guided by Don Ati was to leave the valley towards the old mountain path.
And so in a warm morning of July, the history of that last trip to the sea would begin.

The red sofa would finally leave the house

For years it had won many battles
It endured the weight of Uncle Mariano every monthly visit

Survived the attacks of the cat, and the beating of Doña Ana during her cleaning duties.
It looked like it would be able to win the battle against time.

The only furniture at the house that persisted after many years.
Its style and beauty made it immune to fashion, style changes, the new colors and fabrics.

And then the terrible day arrived, when by the hand of cousin Josefino, one little ash from a cigarette would jump outside the ashtray, and start the flames that would consume it.
