A few snaps from Campeche City

A few snaps from Campeche

Already visited the city of Campeche previously, even shared a couple of pics before here, here and here.
But being there again I decided to do some touristic visits around the city again, of course in the boy mode.
This time found the road to one fort I was unable to find in the previous visit.

Campeche is a really nice city to go walk around and see some nice architectural buildings, and a great view of the ocean in front of it.
The downtown area is a World Heritage area declared by Unesco. And there is a really good reason for it.
There is the remain of the wall and forts that surrounded the city a long time ago, when the city needed them to defend against the pirates.
THe houses in downtown area all have the look and feel from the original times. The churches and historical buildings remain in their original architecture and looks.
AS I said, a really nice area to walk around and admire some nice things.

So anyway, now to explain the pictures .

Yohoho and a bottle of rum

Top Left, is a view of part of the wall that surrounds the downtown area of the city, there is located the Puerta del Mar "Sea Door", that was the entrance to the city from the sea of all the merchandise coming by sea to and from Spain. There was another entrance, Puerta de Tierra (land Door), that is the original one 100%, and has a little fort area around.
Top Right is a view of one of the Small forts located on several points of the wall, there are 7 of them in around the downtown area, used to defend the walls from the Pirate attacks. There are another two forts on two hills on side of the city, that have a great view of the sea, cty and hills around the city. All to defend agains pirate attacks.
Center Left is the goverment building, a really nice piece of architecture, is really pretty, in front of the kiosk on the main plaza and the church.
Center Right, is a photo of the way the houses located in the downtown area look like, all painted in one of a set of specific colors, no house can be painted the same color as their neighbor. Than and the architecture of the houses gives the area a magical feel and look of old times.
Down Left, is a view of the city of Campeche and the sea from one of the fort in the hills, The road nest to the sea is also a great place to walk.
Down right, is a statue that I like very much, located on the sea-walk, the statue is called "Novia del Mar" -Bride of the Sea-, the story is that it is a girl who felt in love with a sailor or pirate, he went back to the sea, promising her to return to get married, she went there to see the sea everyday, waiting for his lover, but he never returned. A really sad story that always put a tear in my eye.
Along with the statue there is this beatiful poem, I am putting it first in Spanish, my translation made it lost any beaty it has, blame Jessica the lousy translator

Las Olas
riman versos en la playa
y la Novia del Mar
se reclina a soñar
bajo de un cielo azul

Jose Narvaez Marquez

Anyway, that was the trip, hopefully tomorrow post the full Chronicle

The poem translated to English

The waves
making verses in the beach
and the Sea Bride
leans to dream
under the blue sky.
